Allotments / Cells
|
The Allotments / Cells installation presents a series of 20 A1 pencil drawings juxtaposing 10 simple sketches of vegetable gardens, found on the internet, and 10 images of different types of animal and plant cells. All text has been removed from these images so that comparison between their organisation and structure may more easily be made. The similarities of these two kinds of structure are then made available for consideration by the viewer.

20 drawings, pencil on A1 paper, composting toilet and compost bin |
In the vicinity of these drawings a composting toilet and compost bin are sited as elements within the overall Allotments / Cells installation. This toilet employs the simplest bucket system for the production of compost, where the key factor is the production of sufficient temperature within the compost heap to kill all pathogens, producing a rich compost after a period of one to two years, suitable for use in vegetable gardens.
The elements of the installation together reflect direct bodily engagement at both our human and cellular scales, the possible epigenetic effects from human-scale behaviours, and consideration of the nature of the necessary relations between an individual and their environment. |
